Complete casting has been announced for the upcoming off-Broadway premiere of Once, based on the hit independent film of the same name. Steve Kazee and Cristin Milioti will star as the Guy and the Girl, respectively, reprising their roles from the show’s recent workshop at American Repertory Theatre in Boston. Once begins previews on November 15 and opens December 6 at New York Theatre Workshop, directed by John Tiffany.
In addition to Kazee and Milioti, the company of Once will feature David Abeles, Claire Candela, Will Connolly, Elizabeth A. Davis, David Patrick Kelly, Anne L. Nathan, Lucas Papaelias, Andy Taylor, Erikka Walsh, Paul Whitty, and J. Michael Zygo.
Once is a modern day musical about an Irish street musician and a Czech immigrant, set on the streets of Dublin. During an eventful week the two meet, begin writing songs together, rehearse and record their songs to take to London in hopes of landing a music contract. Through the music they write, the duo works through their past loves, and are confronted with their new feelings for each other.
Kazee has been seen in the Broadway in Spamalot, 110 in the Shade, To Be Or Not To Be and Edward Albee’s Seascape. Milioti has appeared in New York Theatre Workshop’s The Little Foxes and The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, on Broadway in Coram Boy and The Lieutenant of Inishmore and off-Broadway in Some Americans Abroad, Crooked and The Devil’s Disciple.
The musical features a score by Glen Hansard (frontman of Irish band The Frames) and singer/songwriter Markéta Irglová, who co-starred in the film and won the Best Original Song Academy Award for "Falling Slowly." Irish playwright Edna Walsh contributed the book. The creative team will include set and costume design by Bob Crowley, lighting design by Natasha Katz, sound design by Clive Goodwin, musical staging by Steven Hoggett, and music direction by Martin Lowe.
